Fall Decorating Ideas for Outside
So how exactly do you approach a space that you want to update for a new season?
As always, this works best if your key furniture pieces are neutral. But even if not, you can still work with what you have to add fall color and texture to your space. Working with greens? Add bits of nature. Working with blues? Try adding rusts. Working with burg or pink? Go blush and copper.
Now is the time to break out the fall bins to see what you already have. Then check out Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart for affordable pieces to add an energized look to your home. It’s a lot easier to make seasonal changes when you don’t have to take out a second mortgage to buy updated new decor. Read on for my 6 tips.

Seasonal Pillows
If you’re working with a seating area or bedroom, the easiest way to bring seasonal color in is with throw pillows. Maybe you have fall themed pillows already stashed away in an off-season closet. You can start with those. But also consider adding a few inexpensive fresh ones to breath new life into your decor. You can go with sweater knit patterns, nubby textures or the full breadth of a rich fall palette. The beauty is in the mix and the way they play off each other.
Copper Tableware
Copper is a natural for fall. It gleams and shines and shows off well on a bright autumn day, with sunshine glinting off its warm toned surfaces. It marries perfectly with fall colors, whether you go with rich browns, pale blushes, or anything in between. A copper tray is great for corralling candles, snacks and glassware, or use stemless goblets, copper flatware or tabletop torch to bring autumn flavor to your space.
Wood Serving Pieces
Another material that’s the consummate choice for fall decorating is wood, particularly the warm and lovely acacia wood. Both for its association with the outdoors and its handsome rosy tones, wood lends itself most appropriately to fall entertaining. Try serving pieces like the acacia wood tray with gold handles, the wood and marble lazy susan for serving hors d’oeuvres, or the wood serving bowl that’s ideal for salads.
Birch Candles
When it comes to fall decorating, there are certain motifs that immediately ring familiar and remind us of the season and birch bark is one of them. Like the wood pieces above, birch prompts us to think of time spent outdoors, and the beauty of fall can best be appreciated among the trees. Bark pieces do not have to be authentic to suggest the season and this fun LED candle set is a great choice. Hold it over for winter for a holiday look, too. Other motifs that call to mind the season are leaves and burlap found in candle sets, as well.
Sweater Knit Throw Blankets
Like pillows, throw blankets are a super easy way to include fall color and texture, and for autumn they have a use that goes beyond the merely decorative. How wonderful it is to extend the outdoor entertaining season with the added warmth that blankets can provide. Sweater knit patterns are all the more representative of the fall season, whether cable and fisherman knit or more simple chunky patterns.
Fall Flowers
Topping off any styling endeavor, especially when it involves entertaining, you can never underestimate the power of adding fresh flowers. This is the place where you can go a bit crazy with color because its only temporary and if you make a mistake it will be short-lived. You can try out a color palette you might not normally use, but oh how fun it is to indulge a seasonal mood for a special occasion. Of course, that occasion can simply be grilling outdoors with your immediate family or a large gathering with lots of friends.
Whatever the occasion, transitioning your patio, or really any space, into the fall season can be done quickly and easily, without spending a lot of money. With these fall decorating ideas for outside on the patio, you’d be amazed at how effortless entertaining can be.

Thanks, Bettie! Yes the cushions are technically slipcovered, although they came that way. They zip off for washing. I did not sew them. Wish I had that ability… 🙂
