Did you ever just want to design your own plates?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve approached a table setting with exactly the look I wanted in mind, only to find that what I envisioned was unavailable. I search local stores, then scour the internet, and even hunt through antique markets, but many times I come up empty.
Prints and patterns are a very personal thing and it’s hard to settle. But it’s not so easy to produce your own plates either.
So instead I found the next best thing.
Today I’m joining with an awesome group of bloggers for a wonderful blog hop. This is one of my favorite hops because it’s unique in that it brings together a creative pool of bloggers who each share their DIY printables. The topic this time is fall printables and each post will offer a free printable that you can download yourself with instructions on how to use it. Please be sure to visit the complete array of posts linked at the bottom of this one.
But first, let’s get back to my next best thing.
Since often my tables revolve around one pivotal print, I typically select my salad plates in a pretty pattern and then create the setting around that key piece. This saves money by having to purchase only the salad plates and encourages complexity in finding pieces to complement the primary plate.
But what happens when I can’t find that central plate pattern to define my table?
I’ve discovered the next best thing is to create my own decorative menus and place them on top of the plate stack at each place setting. This way I can develop a tablescape in virtually any theme and I’m only limited by my imagination.
I’m sharing these printable menus further down in the post and they’re completely free!
In addition, for this autumn, I decided to produce a related suite of printables to be used on the table either independently or together.
Besides the menus, I’m offering DIY printable napkin rings. They’re easy to make and add a lovely seasonal note to the dinner table. Simply print out the artwork on heavy white card stock and take care to carefully cut them out. You want to cut right inside the outline so that they maintain their even shape, but they’re meant to be used without a visible outline.
Next use a hole punch to cut holes in the sides, then thread through a satin ribbon and tie them in the back. I find it easiest to keep the ribbon loose and slip them around the napkin first, then pull the ribbon tighter based on the thickness of the napkins.
To showcase the printed artwork I went with a very simple table setting, using classic white plates and natural laundered linen napkins, adding rattan chargers and copper mugs to infuse the table with a note of warm autumn color.
The menus are designed with only the word ‘menu’ printed at the top, leaving space for you add your unique menu choices. You can hand write them if your writing looks good, or you can type up a menu and print on a overlay of vellum, which is thick enough to put through the printer yet transparent enough to see the artwork beneath.
I also love using printed place cards, so I added an assortment to the matched set. Print them out and cut to size, then use a bone folder with a ruler to score a fold line across the center. Fold over and stand. Fill out the names by hand in the color of your choice.

Thanks, Jamie!!
I’m late reading this and so I glad I found it in time for our fish dinner at the church. I’m using the place cards to label the different food. They are so attractive! Thanks for sharing!XOXO
That sounds perfect!!
Wow! These are gorgeous! Can you share the software you used to create them?
Sure. I do everything in Photoshop.
If you found someone to produce plates that look like your menu, I would buy them. Perhaps one of your ‘partners’ would be interested?
Might be a project to work on for the future… 🙂
(Sorry for all the comments!)
Can you tell me whether the rim of the Artland Copertino wine glass is rolled or cut?
Thank you!
Barb
The ones I have are from Bed Bath and Beyond and are not crystal. They have a slight rolled rim but I linked the Artland Copertino because BBB doesn’t appear to carry my glasses anymore. I just checked the website and it looks like the one I linked isn’t available either. I’m sorry about that. It’s very hard to keep up with these vendors who change their links constantly.
Wow, very creative!
Love everything about the table setting. Simple, warm and elegant!
Thank you so much, Lory!
Your designs are perfect!!!!!
