Elegant Holiday Decorating Ideas for the Dining Room
In this post: If you’re looking to bring a little Christmas elegance to the dining room, these holiday decorating ideas will inspire you to entertain at home.⇒
Sometimes I think it takes me a few rounds to get it right.
I started the season with a pretty firm idea of where I wanted to go with my color palette, then experimented with a few twists and ultimately got back to my initial plan.
Specifically, that means a color range of mixed metals, plenty of white, touches of greenery, and subtle accents of blush pink. I’ve used this approach to add a layer of holiday elegance to our dining room, but with the concept well established, I can go back and tweak some of our other rooms, as well. Here’s how I used these holiday decorating ideas in the dining room.
Holiday Decorating Ideas for the Dining Room
The centerpiece of the room, even though it’s in the corner, is a nice lush flocked tree. I love the richness of the flocking and the way it keeps the room looking light and it’s easy to trim as the branches are so fluffy. I started out using only gold, silver and white, but it didn’t feel complete until I added the blush pink. Even though I wanted a soft neutral look, the pink hues are subtle and set the tone for the whole space.
On the sideboard I kept the crowned cherub that always sits there, and added a vignette of glittered cone and bottle brush trees. In front I used smaller painted glass trees and a smattering of greenery to ground the presentation.
The table centerpiece is an antique dough bowl filled to the brim with holiday greens, and then on top I added mini green hydrangeas, blush peonies and white tulips, to mirror the palette of the ornaments on the tree.
To carry the decor to the other side of the room, I hung fisherman knit stockings with bits of greens tucked inside and draped large crystal drops from the knobs on the hutch.
In addition to color, I like to play with varied shapes and sizes, and my ornaments include finials, as well as orbs for a more interesting look. This tree is so full, that it didn’t need much to look decorated, so I stayed away from ribbon and garlands, and even omitted the topper.
However, beneath the tree I set an array of gold rimmed gift boxes, and instead of a traditional skirt I used a faux fur throw in a snowy winter white.
The overall look of the room is a mix of glitter and bling with more natural greenery, taking advantage of the contrasts between warm and cool.
This room hits just the right note that I was hoping for this year, staying close to the neutral palette that it wears all year long, but adding enough decoration and gentle color to be dressed appropriately for the holidays. With vintage crystal and gilding as part of the room’s all-year decor, all that’s left to do it light the candles and enjoy the gentle glow!

You have done an amazing job on your Dining Room, and the tree is so pretty! Just love your choice of colors…soft and elegant.
So beautiful! Such a calm, lovely room.
Beautifully elegant dining room, Lory. I love the subtle color palette and bottle brush trees. The mix of finials and other ornament shapes on your tree is very beautiful, too.
Beautiful. So elegant. May I ask the paint color on your dining room wall? It’s perfect.
Thank you so much! And yes, sure. It’s BM Tapestry Beige.
Thank you!
This is such a lovely room. I love the beautiful Christmas decor in neutrals. My eye is drawn around to every little detail.
It’s beautiful and elegant befitting your dining room. Your chandelier fixture and lamp are very unique. Magnificence!
Have a wonderful Christmas!
Your dining room is so elegant! Every detail in your room is stunning! Thank you for sharing!
Relaxing.
I love this – your colors are gorgeous! I’d love to just sit here and enjoy the tree. With my cup of peppermint hot chocolate Bailey’s and cream, of course! ? Happy Season!
The dining room is so calming and elegant. I looked at flocked trees on line and the reviews say there is big mess when putting one of these together. Did you have any big problems? I want a couple of the lightly flocked pencil trees and try to keep a soft neutral color scheme similar to what you have. Thanks for your inspiration!
Thank you Cecilia! Some are messier than others. The King of Christmas tree in the post is one of the east messy. It’s also the most lush… 🙂
How elegant and inviting! Love everything! The dough board with florals, the beautifully adorned flocked tree. Thank you for your tips but mostly for sharing your home!
🎄🎄🎄 Cecilia
Using your faux fur throw as a Christmas tree skirt is genius! You’ve sparked an avalanche of ideas … I could use that quilt top I never finished for the tree in my guest bedroom. Thank you!
Awesome! I’m so glad you were inspired!!
Love your ideas! Everything Merry & Bright!
Absolutely gorgeous. I need to get out my vintage dough bowls and decorate. I love how you used flowers. Love that look.
Hello
I have been looking for the perfect dining table, when I spotted the one you have.
Can you please tell me where you purchased it from.
Regards
Sham
Hi Sham! My dining table is from Ethan Allen but I bought it many years ago and I do not believe they still have it. I link to the closest table I could find in the post (or you can see it here: https://rstyle.me/+ENphtmnrPOFDTXesQis7dw) but it does not have the drawers at the ends of the table that mine has. It’s currently back-ordered, but I believe will be back in stock shortly. Best, Lory
Very elegant.
I missed the post about your Christmas decorating of your Dining Room. Just seeing it this morning. So lovely! I love your sideboard – it’s simply beautiful. I’d love to know where to find the glass trees you used in the front. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much for the kind words! My glass trees are no longer available, but these are very similar: https://rstyle.me/+Yg6PZqBvuVJfZcSgWvgbTg
