Mothers Day Ideas: Celebrating at Home and Hints for Mothers Day Gifts
In this post: Looking for Mothers Day ideas and ways to celebrate at home? Here are tips for a relaxing grace-filled day, as well as sources for lovely Mothers Day gifts.⇒
*This post was first written in the midst of the pandemic, but the lessons are ever applicable today, so I’ve updated it for this year.
I never expected this to be a good Mother’s Day.
I lost my mom last November and my daughter moved abroad for a year. I anticipated a quiet celebration and a certain level of loneliness.
But never in my wildest dreams did I foresee that the year would be this strange!
Curiously though, the weeks in the house have brought a degree of tranquility to my life. I’ve had the opportunity to get organized, clean closets and catch up on work.
I’ve learned ways to relax and appreciate the little things once again.
Shopping online has become almost a daily activity (even if it’s just for bandaids and such) and speaking to friends and family on the phone, a long-missed treat, has been reclaimed.
It is from this vantage point that I look forward to a grace-filled Mother’s Day.
Mothers Day Ideas
Today I’m joining with a group of my blogger friends to bring you Mother’s Day ideas to perk up your day. I hope you’ll be inspired to celebrate a relaxed and special day, even if it’s more quiet that the ideal you might imagine. Be sure to visit all the other posts at the bottom of this one.
Let’s look at ways to pamper yourself this Mother’s Day!
Sleep In
There’s no greater luxury than waking up in the morning and having the freedom to laze in bed for as long as you’d like.
Ok, maybe some of you have felt like you have nowhere to rush to lately, but if you’re working from home, you’ve likely been as busy as ever. Even without work, there’s always an endless stream of household chores and allowing yourself permission to sleep in is truly a great pleasure.
A comfortable bed, clean soft sheets, a cup of tea and a magazine to peruse are tiny details that can enhance the joy.
Throw in a croissant on a pretty tray or whatever your favorite breakfast indulgence is and you have the makings of a morning straight out of a vacation in Provence.
If you’re not the ‘crumbs in bed’ type, try setting a charming bistro table at the foot of the bed. Sip hot coffee. Take your time. Indulge.
Brunch at Home
Many of us have a picture in mind of what our ideal Mother’s Day would be. For me it’s always been brunch at a quaint French cafe. Over the years, I’ve probably only done this a few times as my mom always preferred to have dinner out, but every year it’s something I aspire to.
Once again, this year, it will be out of the question, but instead I will set a refined table at home and enjoy a sweet repast with my hubby and son.
The key is to set a table that’s as lovely as you can muster. I love to use vintage tableware and feminine pieces for Mother’s Day and the more I mix and match the china, the happier I am. Linen, ruffles, embroidery and lace. All will be present in abundance along with silver and crystal.

Of course you can cook and I know many of you prefer that, but it’s Mother’s Day and we’re going for pampering, so why have to clean pots and pans?
I opt to order in food, whether it be sandwiches or gourmet fare. And you can be sure this is a day that we’ll be ending the meal with dessert.
If you can find frilly cupcakes or other lush sweets, go for it! Mother’s Day comes once a year… 😉
Or if you can’t eat or don’t like sweets, choose whatever is your inclination, but be sure to serve it on the finest dishes that you own.
Spa Day
This is, perhaps, one of my most wished-for ways to spend a day and Mother’s Day is indeed the perfect time to indulge. Set up your bathroom with everything you need. Then relax and enjoy.
You’ll need to think ahead to be sure you have everything in your home, so plan in advance and order online. A plush robe, deliciously scented candles, a serene playlist and the speakers to play it on. A cup of flavored tea or a glass of wine and, of course, bath salts and lotions to ease your muscles.
You might add essential oils, as well, and keep potpourri nearby.
This is also a great time to enjoy a home facial and why not give yourself a manicure if you haven’t gotten one in a long time?
Flowers
Spending time at home doesn’t mean a lack of flowers. You can order a bouquet with your groceries or send yourself an arrangement from an online source.
In fact, while I’ll be sharing gift ideas in the shopping guide below, one of my all-time favorite gifts is a year of flowers. There are many services that offer that very thing or you can limit it to a few months if the full year is more than you want to spend. You can also get a weekly delivery from a local florist and this is something I see as the ultimate luxury.
In addition to cut flowers, Mother’s Day is the time of year that many of us begin planting our gardens. My sister-in-law has a tradition of spending every Mother’s Day doing this and it’s the perfect activity for a Mother’s Day spent at home.
It can be as simple as filling the containers on your patio or you can go further and plant many of the beds in your garden.
Prep the Patio
I am so looking forward to the warmer weather and, this year more than ever, spending time outside! I can’t wait to decorate the patio which I’ve been thinking about for some time and have spent weeks working on what I intend to add or update.
Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to fluff the outside for summer entertaining! Yes, this year your party guests may be just your immediate family, but that’s no reason to ignore your decor. On the contrary, try to make your patio into your dream space. If you have some basic furniture, sometimes all it takes is some pillows and planters!
When it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day, a little primping and indulging can go a long way to making you feel coddled. And most of that can be done at home.
Then spend some time on the phone or video with the people you love. ❤️
Eat well, drink some and crank up your favorite tunes.
And with a little luck, hopefully you’ll come away feeling invigorated and refreshed!

Excellent gift and celebrating ideas Lory! I plan a spa day for myself, and it’ll be fun to pick out beautiful gifts for the other mothers in my life! These are great options – thanks! And Happy Mother’s Day to you! ?
I know this will be a difficult Mother’s day for you but you have a good plan…flowers, hot bath, and good wine! I love the Wedgewood set and have it displayed in my dining room. I just looked at the beautiful “Pretty on the Patio” post and want to toss all my mixed matched patio furniture in the dumpster! I need some advise on how to make everything look good together since I cannot trash what I have. The patio with the hanging baskets is my favorite! Thanks for inspiring and bringing me beautiful ideas. Stay safe and be strong!
Lory,
I love the Mother’s Day pampering ideas. I would love to have a day to pamper myself.
Oh my, the items in your gift guide are to die for.
I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day.
Blessings to you.
Thanks! Yes, I think we all should pamper ourselves from time to time… 🙂
