In this post: Choose your Thanksgiving decor to represent your values this holiday. Here are 6 not-so-obvious values worth celebrating this Thanksgiving.⇒
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday.
It avoids commercialism, which is remarkable in itself (imagine, after all these years, we’ve managed to keep it free of gift giving!) and is available to all, regardless of religious affiliation.
That it’s a holiday that exists solely for the purpose of being grateful is truly exceptional and is among the reasons I love it more than any other.
It also represents the ingathering of family, and encourages us to celebrate ‘all things home’.
That’s enough right there!
Meaningful Thanksgiving Decor
We’ve all enjoyed the bounty of a Thanksgiving dinner, that parade of dishes that could feed an army, and the overstuffed feeling that follows a day of indulging.
But beyond simply being thankful for family and food, there are more subtle messages associated with such a selfless holiday. They are well worth contemplation on a day spent with loved ones, and merit sharing at the table when it’s your turn to say what you’re grateful for.
For today’s post, I thought it would be fun to explore some of these values and portray them reflected in my Thanksgiving decor.
I’m sharing my family room dressed for the holiday, accented in shades of plum, as part of a blog hop with my favorite group of bloggers. You can visit all the other posts at the bottom of this one, but for now let’s look at 6 values worth celebrating this Thanksgiving and how you can represent them in your home decor.
A sense of belonging
What better feeling is there than having your “posse”, the group you get together with for all important occasions? It may be family or it could be friends, but having a default place to go and a sense of belonging provides a cozy feeling of warmth and security.
It’s like wrapping up in a blanket to be coddled and protected and is represented in my family room by this lovely plaid throw.
A feeling of being alive and well
The mums at the foot of my hearth signify a sense of well being, and the value we place on feeling uniquely alive. Of course we’re all grateful when we have our health, but I’m also referring to that exhilarating awareness that comes with experiencing an unusually awakened state. It might follow a burst of creativity or something else that resonates with you.
I chose live plants, instead of cut flowers, to mirror that vitality.
The priority of time to relax
How many of us really take enough time to relax? Slowing down and spending time being present is a commodity we should invest in and protect as much as we safeguard our possessions. Sit down for a leisurely drink with loved ones in these pretty cordial glasses and really listen to each other.
A softer kinder view of the world
This is one of my favorites and one I think we need more now than ever. I covet a gentler approach to life, a softer way of communicating and kinder view of the world. These charming velvet pumpkins are soft and squishy and symbolize this compassionate path that we’d all be so much better off adopting.
An appreciation for the small things
I’ve always been a fan of small pleasures and little luxuries and a respect and appreciation for the small things in life add up to a life well lived. We don’t always need to go after the next big thing, but alternately can focus on perfecting the little things instead.
The mini pumpkins are here to represent those small things in life that can make a huge difference when given the right attention.
The pursuit of a sweet life
Of course we all want to live a happy, sweet life and the fruits on the silver platter and meant to symbolize just that quest.
Yes, we’d like life to be meaningful and to accomplish great things, but ultimately the sweetness of a pleasant easy life can be more highly valued than anything else.
These values are intangible and are only symbolic in my decor, but they become realized when the home is filled with loved ones who embrace and live by these ideals.
The presence of such standards is among the elusive qualities that make a house a home, and something worth striving and being thankful for!
