Spring Decorating: Mixing Vintage Decor with Modern Accent Furniture

In this post: Want to add a seasonal lift to your home with little effort and no time? These 3 vignettes mix vintage decor with modern accent furniture for a fresh look.⇒

Do you ever walk around your house, catch a glimpse of a little corner and think, “that could use a little sprucing up”?

Yes, we all have rooms we’d love to makeover from top to bottom, but that’s not what this post is about. Rather, I’m talking about the little things you can do lift a whole room by paying attention to one small section.

Re-styling a piece of furniture with a fresh vignette is a great way to update a space. Or adding a new accent piece and garnishing it to fit in with your taste can have a similar effect.

Given my preferred style, I love to embellish new accent furniture pieces with vintage decor and enjoy taking time with the design until it feels exactly right.

It’s the perfect opportunity to display a collection, or to even start a new one, and I’ve been shopping online lately to fulfill a few such goals.

Today, as part of our series “20 Minute Decorating”, I’m sharing three regions in my home that I’ve refreshed in this way, with the additional bonus of adding a dose of spring.

*Please be sure to visit all the other 20 Minute Decorating posts at the bottom of this one!

1. Crystal Decanters on a Bar Cart

One of my favorite pieces of accent furniture is a bar cart on wheels, because I love that you can move it around as the occasion calls for it. Set up tea in the study or drinks on the patio.

In this case I’ve moved ours into the family room to make use of a corner that draws beautiful sunlight.

The brass and glass bar cart is from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart and I’ve adorned it with crystal decanters that I’ve collected over the years. I can fill them with various spirits for a relaxing evening at home and next I’ll be looking for silver decanter tags to identify each one.

*This post was sponsored by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart, but all opinions and product-love are purely my own.

I topped it off with sunny yellow tulips, the quintessential sign of spring, plus peonies in vintage silver and cherry blossom branches on the floor nearby.

2. A New Ironstone Collection

I’ve admired ironstone for years, but I only owned a piece or two myself, and recently I began thinking about re-styling a few of our shelf units and ironstone came to mind.

It actually started in a different room, but I found myself looking at this new piece in our bedroom and I realized sometimes even a new piece could benefit from a fresh look.

shelving unit

We added this console table not long ago, which fit perfectly under our TV, but the first time I styled it I used too much color for the look I’m after.

For spring, instead, I love the idea of using mostly white and silver, which launched my quest for a growing ironstone collection.

I scoured the internet for the most interesting pieces, picking mostly pitchers and tureens, with a preference for unique and varying shapes. I haven’t received them all yet because I just started just a week or two ago, so picture the two rather simple pieces on the left (above) replaced by more decorative tureens.

I also added a set of antique white enamelware coffee pots to be the crowning touch in the center of my display, and I think the entire enterprise enhances the shelf unit perfectly.

3. Tufted Ottoman in the Closet

Our closet is spacious and provides lots of storage and thanks to the built-ins we added is quite organized and neat.

But what it never had was a pretty decorated look.

I’ve always wanted more of a dressing room ambiance and the addition of this new tufted ottoman really helps in that effort. A tossed feminine blanket and a tray with teacup and pearls, plus a vase of fresh flowers bring charm to this spot.

In the nook above the drawers I added pieces from my silver collection and the pink flowers in the vases mirror the ones on the ottoman, as well.

If your home needs a little update but you’re not up for a complete renovation just yet, consider styling little vignettes to add fresh life to a corner or two. Mixing vintage decor with modern accent furniture is a super easy and affordable way to do exactly that.

And you can do it from your couch!

Then order some flowers for a touch of spring and sit back and enjoy… 🙂

I love the idea of sprucing up just a single spot, it’s so easy and lets me bring out treasures that would otherwise be forgotten. I love the big urn with French script on it. I just sold 2 urns that were an ugly color and wish I had kept one to paint and stencil:( Oh well, gives me something to look for when I can go thrifting! I hope your daughter is safe while she is so far away. Take care and stay sweet!
