10 Must Have Winter Decor Ideas to Add Cozy to Your Home
In this post: If you’re looking for winter decor ideas for after Christmas, these 10 ideas will help add warmth and coziness to your home.
Who doesn’t like rolling up in a fluffy throw by the fire, when the temperature dips outside?
Winter decor after Christmas has a very special character in that it needs to feel comfy and cozy and yet at the same time reflect the icy look of outdoors. Its aim is to exude a curious mix of warm and cold.
I love to use lots of white, both for the clean calm feel it imparts, as well as for the way it mirrors a fresh blanket of snow. I also enjoy the natural imagery of the outdoors, while the fabrics now become warm and rich with textures and bulk.
Cozy Winter Decor Ideas
The following list presents 10 must-have winter decor ideas that will help you add that cozy feel to your home.
You may already own quite a few of these items, but some fresh options are always fun to add to your decor.

1. Faux Fur Decor
Nothing says winter quite like a faux fur blanket. Draped over a lush sectional, a winter throw invites us to curl up on the sofa with a cup of hot cocoa. Try a fur stool near the front door for a warm welcome, or fuzzy pillows on an occasional chair this winter season!
2. Sweater Knits for the Home
All sweater knits ring true for this season, but especially fisherman knits and anything with cables. If it’s something you’d wear for a hike in the woods, it’s even better tossed on the couch to relax in front of the fire. Warm up the winter months with a lovely knit pillow on a tufted wingback chair for a note of comfort.
3. Bark Covered Decor
Winter is a very textural season and bark is reminiscent of a snowy day outdoors. Wrapped around planters or other decor, it looks lovely with a white bouquet or an evergreen plant. When the holiday garlands come down, it’s a great time to decorate the fireplace with candles and vases on the living room mantel.
4. Velvet
Whether used in drapery panels, a quilted throw pillow or covering a piece of furniture, rich velvet exudes a feeling of warmth. It adds depth and luster, enhancing any color palette, from pastels and neutrals to dramatic jewel tones.
5. Twigs and Branches
Another reminder of the bare trees outside, twigs and branches look great indoors. Replace holiday’s evergreen branches with curly willow shoots in a statuesque vase, or place two on a dresser, flanking a low centerpiece. Fill a bowl with pine cones and twigs to underscore that bare winter feel.
6. Snowflake Imagery
If you have snowflake ornaments left over from the holidays, they can still look pretty around the house. The imagery is pretty on pillows or bedding, as well. Decorative embellishments don’t have to be actual snowflake patterns to leave the impression of a crisp snowy day. The glimmer of metallic thread will enhance the mood.
7. Woodland Motifs
Deer, polar bears or other woodland creatures are the perfect motifs for winter home decor. Antlers can be found on all types of objects and stag heads look great on tabletop decor. Create a pretty winter vignette to be displayed on the side tables, and highlight the motifs with a lamp or lantern.
8. Menswear Tweeds & Patterns
Wooly fabrics always remind me of winter and the tweedier they are the better. Tartan plaid, checks and pinstripes work well, too. A Prince of Wales throw blanket, a houndstooth pillow, a tattersal drapery panel or a chalk stripe napkin, all communicate the same haberdashery feel. Accent your winter whites with these sophisticated patterns, then toss in a natural element like a pinecone or two.
9. Chunky Knit Throws
I mentioned, above, sweater knits like fisherman and cable knits, but the newer super chunky knit throws are awesome for decorating your winter home. They are as cozy as you can get and oh-so-exaggerated in scale. A fun trend that’s tailor made for the cold weather months.
10. Mercury glass
The icy look of mercury glass is prefect to reflect the winter light. Group a selection of candlesticks in varying heights or mix in vases of flowers and other silvered decor pieces. They fit right in for a winter look.
Pick a few of these winter decor ideas and mix them up in a crisp white room or one decorated in icy pastels. Pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate, light a fire and say goodbye to the winter blues!

I adore the Mongolian fur pillow! And I didn’t realize I could have used my mercury glass after Christmas! (Eyes rolling) Since the weather here in South Georgia has just recently dropped to the low 40’s, I am ready to snuggle and scroll through Pinterest by the fire! Great ideas for using cable knit sweaters! I just saw some at Goodwill and will be heading back to get them. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
My pleasure!! So glad you enjoyed!
A furry bench by the door? That sounds like a nice change of pace to our copper boot mat that never gets used as we come through our garage. I think I’ll look into that…that sweet bench ya posted was a bit pricey but oh so pretty:0)
The art piece with the trees would fit right into the winter months..I always keep my artwork up year round and I’d like to change some of it for the seasons..not just a Santa piece but something for the cold months here…they are long.
I just love switching out seasonal decor and artwork is one thing many people don’t think to change, yet it’s so easy… 🙂
Lory,
Love all these cozy ideas. Strange winter for us here in Minnesota! Last winter we were bombarded with snow by now. Enjoying the idea that my kids and families all around can travel in safer weather.
Merry Christmas! Love your posts. Thanks for all the work you put into them.
I agree about the weather… 🙂 Thank you for the kind words and Merry Christmas!
