If there’s one thing I love to style more than anything else, it’s an elegant holiday table.

I particularly love to put my own decorating spin on holidays known for kitschy decor. So as Independence Day approaches, it’s only natural that I would forego the plastic flags and glittered stars.

Instead I put together a 4th of July champagne brunch tablescape, to celebrate our freedom in my very own way.

4th of July Decorations

I certainly wanted my table to read red, white and blue, but I preferred the elements that resonate with my design sense.

So I surveyed my cabinets for all the options until a concept emerged that would be both pretty and patriotic.

It comprises many of the elements that represent my design preferences, with casual elegance at the center of it all. From crystal and china to embroidered linens and vintage silver, the components join together to make a beautiful statement.

Use What You Own

I’ve also been making an effort lately to try to re-use what I already own, so for this table I only bought one new thing, the woven twig stars in the colors of the flag.

I love that they say “July 4th” while maintaining a homespun feel and they look right at home next to my vintage transferware pitcher.

(I don’t think I could’ve said the same thing about the glittered fireworks that were in the store display right next to these!)

Decide How to Display Your Color Theme

The color story for this table was pre-selected, although I suppose I could have split hairs over what type of blue and red to use. But I chose to stay classic so the theme would be recognizable, since the use of elegant tableware was already somewhat out of the ordinary for a holiday that typically revolves around barbecuing.

For that reason, I opted to display the mix of colors throughout the table, so the plate stack, the napkins, and even the florals bring in all three hues. This table is, at heart, all about red, white and blue.

The color theme is repeated in the glassware, from red mason jars serving as vases to the stemware used for both water and wine.

The Plate Stack

With the palette determined, the fleshing out of the concept began, as always, with a pattern mix.

At the top of my plate stack I used Royal Staffordshire transferware plates in a diminutive appetizer size. Peeking out next are blue and white salad plates that are actually Hanukkah dishes, but they work well here with their almost lace-like edging.

A simple white dinner plate lends a crisp backdrop and finally decorative pewter chargers ensure the special event tone.

Glassware

One of the defining aspects of the table, and a key for delivering pops of color, is the use of rich blue goblets for the water glass at each place setting. They contrast beautifully against the red mason jar florals and glint in the sunlight, playing off the glen plaid cut crystal champagne flutes, which tower statuesquely over them.

Table Linens

With so much bright color on the table, I selected a white vintage tablecloth as the underpinning for the setting. It’s exquisite tonal embroidery set it apart from the ordinary.

Like the plates and glassware, the napkins reflect the red, white and blue theme. They are clustered in a simple napkin ring, but the rich colors help tell the story. Laundered linen lends a casual air, yet the pretty edging details take it up just a notch.

Vintage Accents

Vintage pieces are scattered along the tablescape to add quiet elegance. The crystal and silver condiment set at the center felt balanced to me when flanked by the bright florals.

Also in silver, the vintage flatware was passed down in my family and finds a place on many of my tables. The glimmer of silver is thread throughout this table, from the solid chargers to the delicate napkin rings.

Floral Arrangements

The most significant impact on many tables often comes from the florals. I chose blue hydrangeas, white peonies and a mix of claret red flowers, including gerber daisies and varied size roses. They are full and lush with tons of color, yet also free-wheeling in their languid drape over the relaxed edge of the mason jars.

I love the idea of starting a summer holiday with a celebratory brunch.

The rest of the day is then open to do as you please with plenty of time left to head out for evening fireworks!
