If you crave a bit of simplicity in your life, I’m guessing you’re already a fan of capsule dressing.
The concept is straightforward. Select a limited amount of pieces to pull together a wardrobe of items that can be mixed and matched to create a maximum amount of varied looks. You should be able to put together outfits that can take you almost anywhere you need to go, from casual weekend wear, to work and evenings out. Except for the most formal events, you should be well covered by this well curated mix pieces.
The key to dressing this way is to select each piece with the utmost of care, making sure it fits within your selected color palette and works with a broad range of items. It’s always best to choose a simple color story, generally as classic and neutral as possible. This is a great way to save money by buying fewer items, and leaves room in your closet, making it easier to stay organized.
You can always add in a unique exceptional piece for interest, but the overall goal is to be able to combine the pieces in different ways to create looks that are chic and stylish, while giving the impression that you have far more variety than you actually do. Creative pairing begins with selecting the most versatile pieces, including a blend of items that are on trend with those that are super classic.
Below you will find 8 styled outfits that can take you through spring and into summer, providing options for the myriad of events in your life. You’ll find casual looks for relaxed time off, and more elegant ensembles for a night out on the town. They are affordable pieces in great silhouettes. The options are endless, so no doubt you can mix the pieces in even more varied ways to suit your taste. Just mix, match and enjoy!

Outfit Options
The first look pairs classic spring color and pattern with on-trend proportions. The white linen pant showcases a wide leg silhouette, and mixes beautifully with the striped button down shirt. Top them with an oversized beige boyfriend blazer, the shape of the moment. A flat sandal and straw bag add warm-weather flair, while a toggle necklace is the icing on the cake.

The next outfit contrasts tailored with casual, exemplified by the ivory tweed ‘lady jacket’ worn over a simple camisole. The cropped jacket hits the wide leg jeans in just the right place. A toggle coin necklace works well with this chic look and a stack heel mule reflects the polish of the top-piece. Finish it off with a top handle satchel and sunglasses.

For a more relaxed look, grab a pair of up-trending cargo pants. Coordinate them with a simple short sleeve tee and neutral New Balance trainers. A khaki baseball cap mirrors the tone of the utility pant, while a black hobo bag lends a slouchy attitude. Top it off with an oversized denim trucker jacket.

For a look that’s as tasteful and simple as you can get, mix a cuffed straight jean with a perfect white tee and western Chelsea boots. A cropped cardigan is what gives this look a new twist. Add a chunky earring for a note of polish and a cute straw bag.

If you want to channel updated prep, try a white denim midi skirt with a navy striped tee. A white platform sneaker brings stylish comfort, as a link bracelet adds understated elegance. Top it with a classic trench and you’re good to go.

One of my favorite newer shapes is the tailored Bermuda short, shown here with front pleats and a shallow cuff. It pairs beautifully with a crisp poplin shirt and a beige cardi. The brown leather belt adds finish to the ensemble, as do pearl drop earrings and square sunglasses. The straw bag underscores the neutral tones in this look.

Long dresses are everywhere this year, and this tiered sleeveless maxi dress is oh-so-comfortable. For chilly days pop on a black denim shacket. The wonderful sun hat works perfectly with the handbag, while low wedge espadrilles lend a light-hearted air. Dress it up with a toggle necklace.

Perhaps my favorite piece in the whole lot is this fabulous gingham maxi dress paired with chunky flat ‘dad sandals‘. An interlaced leather hobo bag can corral your things and still look chic, as beaded drop earrings add a note of whimsy. Keep a slicker in tow, in case of rain.
This capsule manages to touch on the latest shapes and proportions, yet maintains a look thats classic and refined. The palette is limited and very wearable, which makes it easier to experiment with the updated styles. There are countless ways to mix and match the pieces, which is the defining characteristic of capsule dressing.

I absolutely love this capsule wardrobe and that most of the pieces you included are affordably priced. Matter of fact, I ordered the navy cropped cardigan since that is exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks for sharing your fashion expertise!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad to hear you found something you liked… 🙂
Love the outfit capsules! I just wish I could select the item from the group/picture. I’m not sure what each item is labeled under..or am I missing something..which could totally be the deal here:0)
My computer was lagging behind but now I have the photos to select..odd but typical my luck..ha!
I do wish there was a denim jean that was light weight fabric for summer..so many are heavy denim and I just go for linen or shorts. A summer tank dress or short sleeve with built in bras?! Now that would be nice. I’ve sewn my own in before but that’s more work. I love the look of tank dresses but how do I pull that off without a bandana smashing bra? Oh such a problem to have!
Such great information on capsule wardrobe!

Great collection! I’m thinking of ordering the white linen pants. Did you order these, by chance?
Yes, they are a great relaxed fit. They are not actually linen, but a blend.
