French Country Fridays 62: Savoring the Charm of French Inspired Decor
Welcome to French Country Fridays 62, a place to celebrate the charm of French inspired decor!
First, I want to thank you all for your ideas and recommendations about donating the items I need to find a home for. I’m still going down the list and making calls, but there are some really great ideas. In our case, the problem is that we don’t have the time to wait months for a pickup, which some of these places require. Others are pretty expensive to hire to take the stuff away.
Here’s what we’ve decided on so far. We’re using Habitat for Humanity ReStore to take most of the furniture. We had already gotten rid of everything that wasn’t in good condition, so they’ve agreed to take most of what’s left. We did have to photograph everything and submit for approval. We also have to wait a few weeks for the pickup, which brings us to just a few days before the closing on the house. They gave us the caveat that the people who pick up can decide not to take something if they decide it’s not worthy. If that happens, we will only have a couple of days to find an alternate solution, and we don’t live in the same state as the house, so reacting quickly to changes in plans is not easy.
What they would not take is the piano and the mattress and boxspring. My experience is that it’s next to impossible to get rid of a mattress in New York, but I will keep you updated on what happens.
I did decide that the best thing to do with the small decor items is to give them away to my readers. No one would appreciate them as much as you guys. I will take pictures and post each week (or when I have time) and pick one person at random (literally out of a hat) each week from the comments on my posts. You only need to comment once to be eligible, but each comment will generate another chance to be entered in the drawing that week, so more comments equal more chances to win. I will only ship to the US, so it doesn’t cost me a small fortune. I’ll be starting this in a few weeks or whenever I pick up the stuff, so stay tuned.
Let’s take a look at what my friends are sharing this week.

Hi Lori
I did not know you were moving. Who ever purchased your home is a lucky person.
All the work you have completed it’s just beautiful.
Where are you moving to?
Good luck with your move. Habitat for Humanity is a place we go to when we remodel. They are great. I love that they pick up your pieces.
Have a great day
Rose
Hi Rose! Thank you for your kind words!! We are not moving… 🙂 I’m cleaning out my parents’ home that we just sold. It’s quite the project.
Look forward to reading your site every morning.
What a lovely comment to wake up to! Thank you!!
Several thoughts, Lory. If peeps get more chances with more comments, will that not generate some not-so-useful posts? How do you balance a) what kind of items people want with b) pulling names out of a hat? It’s been my personal experience that I don’t even *know* what I want until I see it. lol. No, I mean that blogs are a “market pull” in the sense that when people see something beautiful, they suddenly want it, even if it’s not on their list. Guilty as charged, I’m afraid.
And again, do check out Nextdoor.com and join, because it’s a closed community of neighbours, so it’s relatively safe and effective. It’s great for neighbourhood info and safety too. But lots of luck with that bed…impossible in any state, not just NY.
Now to be fair, I don’t have a horse in this race, cause you couldn’t mail anything to me…I’m off to our Alpine restoration project of an old stone house…
Thanks for the input, Beatrice! I didn’t realize NextDoor is a closed community. That’s even better and will use it for future for sure!
As for the comments, I wasn’t really being scientific about this and I’m sure it will evolve once I do it. My thought was to take pictures of the items and each week offer something and if people are interested, they can comment. Then those people are the ones I’d put into a hat and pick from there. Since I will not only be giving the things away for free, but will also be paying for shipping, I thought I might encourage people to read and comment so that the blog gets some benefit, too… 🙂
Hi Lory, it sounds like you are making some progress toward moving your parent’s things out! I live in a VERY rural South Georgia town and I appreciate how helpful everyone is because we are a close community of friends. Reading about the challenges that you are dealing with to literally BEG people to take things is so foreign to me because here there are so many underprivileged people that would love to have anything….the mattress would not last 30 minutes before it would be gone. Good luck!!
OH! I am excited about your giveaway! I love treasures! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Thank you, Cecilia!
