Transition to Fall: Creating a Cozy Bedroom with Color and Texture
In this post: Looking to transition your bedroom for fall without using leaves and pumpkins? Here’s how to create a cozy bedroom using color and texture. ⇒

This is the time of year I love to go for ice cream in the evening.
That special little treat that just oozes summer, with its cool, sweet taste and in defiance of the pre-summer diet, it’s a distinct and intentional way to hold onto the fading season.
But I can multitask. As sure as I’m enjoying these lazy summer days, my creative soul is being stirred. A quick errand through the mall yields a glimpse of more soulful colors and I find my heart quickens just a bit. Fall is coming and despite my insistence on living in the moment, the designer in me is looking ahead.
To be clear, I don’t redecorate my home each season. Instead, it’s more a series of minor transitions that follow and reflect the changing environment outside. Over time these mini progressions add up to an evolving space that ages well and mirrors my stretching psyche.

Decorating for Fall without “Fall Decor”
At this early stage, I particularly enjoy decorating for fall without classic ‘fall decor’. It’s not that I don’t enjoy styling my home with leaves, wreaths, gourds and pumpkins. Quite the contrary, I love those unequivocal seasonal signals.
But for a gentle transition I prefer a subtler approach, more a shift in tone than an all-out changing of the guard.
There once was a time when fall decorating meant pulling out the hay bales and pumpkins and staging a contrived display, erected in an afternoon with a clear message that a new season has arrived. It was always reminiscent of the change in stock at the local Hallmark.
But this is not that time. Today I’m sharing a more easy-going transition into the coming season, with tips for creating a cozy fall bedroom utilizing color and texture.

Evaluate Your Existing Color Palette
The first step in transitioning a room is to remove all the decorative accents and to evaluate the foundation. This means looking at the key furniture pieces, the wall color, the flooring, and anything else that you’re less likely to be changing. These are the items that are best kept neutral for precisely the flexibility that such a base provides.
If your room’s foundation is a shade of off white, you’re ahead of the game and can go in any direction. But even a neutral base can affect your options for a new color feeling in the room, with cool tones being a bit limiting while warmer tones are easier to work with. Stark white you need to be careful with, as it looks best with softer accents.
Still, even a room with an established colorful palette can be tweaked for the seasons if done carefully. Have a navy blue room? Consider a sunbaked russet accent. In a blush pink space, add moss or chalky brown. For a pale green room look to plum or eggplant.
Whatever the room’s foundational palette, be sure to look at it honestly. You can’t ignore the reality of what is actually there. Most colors can be softened with well placed accents, but the real problem comes when you have several conflicting colors. If you can remove pieces temporarily to create a new look, it’s worth considering if they’re not essential to your space.

Select Accent Colors to Work with Your Base
Assuming you have a variety of options to choose from, now is the time to select your direction. If you’re going for an easy transition, you may prefer whitened or softer versions of the classic fall palette. Save the golds and burgundies for later in the season and opt for browned over tones, such as sage green, tobacco, teal and apricot.
These colors will read as fall, even without the requisite pumpkins, and will warm up a room that has cool undertones (such as my white and greige bedroom featured in this post). They are soft enough to take you through the rest of the summer and ease you gently into the coming months.
But you can be just as successful using subtle darks. Their essential aspect is that the tones are soft with a quiet nod to the season at hand.

Shop Your Home
There is no doubt that fresh displays online and in stores are what initially inspire me to update my rooms for a new season, but the very next step is to see what I already have in my home that could deliver the new look I’m going for.
If you’ve settled on a palette you’ve never used before, you may nonetheless have items that fit the bill. The throw from the sitting room may look completely different when paired with a patterned pillow that’s been living in the guest room, as it brings out a pop color you haven’t highlighted in the past.
This is also the time to find textural components that bring warmth to your spaces, evoking an autumnal feel. Rattan or seagrass baskets, vintage leather books, antiqued brass trays, raw wood bowls and vases. These are the pieces that will work beautifully with your soft fall palette and bring a richness to your rooms before you’re ready for leaves and gourds.

Add a Few New Pivotal Pieces
Inevitably, each year, I find it’s always fun to add a few new elements to play a pivotal role. Typically it might be a simple pillow cover that encapsulates my color story or perhaps an accent throw that brings out a color I’d like to feature. Those are the two pieces I added to this bedroom, while everything else I already owned.
This is an inexpensive way to freshen a space and breath new life into the items you’ve used before. Combining pieces in new ways can update the whole endeavor and sometimes all it takes is one new piece to pull it off. A pillar candle in a solid color might bring out the pop color in your bedding, or a well placed vase can highlight the artwork on the wall.

Putting it All Together with Color and Texture
These concepts can be used in any room in your home, but here I’m featuring a bedroom, so let’s look at pulling it all together in this particular space. This bedroom was essentially white and greige, with all white bedding and greige carpet and walls. My goal was to warm it up with herb-like colors and the pivotal piece was the embroidered pillow. I pulled the moss green out to highlight with the woolen throw, and backed the single new pillow with the camel ones I already owned.
From there it was just a matter of bringing in organic textures in natural tones, peppering the room with some of my favorites including scented candles, vintage ironstone, rattan baskets and leather books. I also changed the artwork over the bed bringing up a piece I had in the dining room that worked perfectly with the new direction.
There’s actually not a lot of color in the room, but the net effect is a warmer and much cozier space.

If you’d like to add a hint of fall into your home, or simply want to add some subtle color to an otherwise neutral space, following these tips will get the job done. It’s updated and current and feels altogether fresh to me, and yet it was very simple to accomplish with very little monetary outlay.
And there’s not a pumpkin, wreath or leaf branch anywhere.
Of course, I can’t guarantee that will be the case as the season progresses…

More Fall Decorating Ideas

Just the right touches that speak of fall. Your guest room looks very cozy. I don’t add any leaves, pumpkins, etc. to my bedrooms but instead change out the decorator pillows and throws. I do add them to my living room dining room and kitchen but not till late September when the temps cool down and it feels like fall.
Thank you so much! I agree there are many ways to do fall, some which are more overt than others. I think the key is to go for a cozy feel which really enhances how we enjoy the season at home… 🙂
