Adding Summer Color to a White Dining Table Setting

I love a blank slate.

Fresh beginnings, starting from scratch, a bare clean foundation.

So it’s no surprise, when it comes to table settings, I enjoy working with a pure white base. From this vantage point, I can build on an elegant underpinning, add just a few new items and come up with a completely fresh look.

Begin with a Concept

For this summer table, I set my vision of the perfect clean slate – a casually elegant tableau comprised of all my favorite design elements, placed in my nearly all-white breakfast room. From there, I could add summer color at whim.

The bedrock of this look is what I perceive as an all white table setting. It’s not actually all white, but incorporates crystal and silver, as well. Much like my style when decorating my rooms, I love to mix aged but beautiful French pieces with chippy casual worn items. It’s very “denim and diamonds”, so to speak, and is the hallmark of my style. On this table, it takes shape through almost entirely vintage pieces.

Design the Plate Stack

Starting with the plate stack, I used my favorite pewter chargers and layered on 2 different Limoges china patterns. Both have tiny pink flower borders and a bit of gilded edging, but from a few feet back, they still read as predominately white.

Alternatively, you could try more casual white stoneware, in anything from a simple white plate to one with tonal textured patterns, depending on the level of visual interest you’re going after. I’ve also been known to mix china and stoneware in the same stack.

Underpinnings

The plates sit atop a laundered linen tablecloth with ruffled edges, draped over our white farmhouse dining table. They’re surrounded by a ragtag assortment of French side chairs, and in the background you might also spy something new to our breakfast room.

This is the one room in our house that, up until now, had no window coverings. Facing the woods and not really needing privacy, I loved having the light shine in. But one corner peeked at my neighbor’s patio and I thought it was finally time to finish the room properly and add something to the windows. 

I truly wanted the least intrusive option and so I went with plantation shutters for the bottom half of the windows.  They provide just enough privacy while allowing in as much light as possible and you may remember how awesome they looked in our basement remodel. They’re very affordable yet are of superior quality!

Add Color with Fresh Flowers

With the white foundation laid, and the cool vintage vibe defined, it was time to add in a note of summer. I decided to do that by simply adding fresh flowers, most notably via the simplest of centerpieces. I filled my chippiest garden urn to brimming over with a lush display of pink peonies and the curious mix of exquisitely delicate blooms against the rusty urn set my heart aflutter. This is the stuff tabelscape dreams are made of (well, for me anyway!)

The Napkin Cluster

I tucked sweet pink roses into my crystal napkin rings, creating the perfect contrast against the crisp white embroidered napkins.

Side note – these favorite napkin rings of mine are an old set from Pottery Barn, long discontinued and hard to find, so you won’t find them in the resource list below, but you can occasionally find them on eBay or elsewhere on the web if you search voraciously.

I often find the use of one particular element can ‘throw a look’ into a different direction and give unique personality to the table or room in question. On this table, that element was the inclusion of deep orange tulips and they’re the key to rooting this table into the realm of summer. Pink, on it’s own, could channel any season, but mix fuchsia with flaming orange and the seasonal message is clear.

What’s so characteristic about this table setting is that despite the colorful presentation, if you strip away the flowers, it’s at heart a simple white dining table. Change up the flowers and you have a completely different perspective and attitude. Some other summer combinations to try with white are:

• Blue and yellow
• Shades of purple and lavender
• Red, white and blue
• White with green
• A full palette of pink, purple, yellow and green

More and more I find myself gravitating toward a clean white slate of vintage components as the quintessential underpinning for the home styling that makes me happy. Whether it’s a room or a vignette, a tablescape or an entire house, get those components right and the rest is easy!

Tips for Creating a White Foundation for Your Tables

• Start with a White Linen Tablecloth
  A crisp white linen tablecloth instantly sets a fresh, summery tone. Choose one with subtle texture or ruffled edging to add softness and movement to your foundation.
• Layer with a Lace or Crochet Overlay
  Add vintage charm by placing a lace or crochet runner over your linen base. The layered look adds dimension and feels both nostalgic and feminine.
• Use Chippy Garden Urns as Centerpieces
  A weathered urn adds French country soul to your table. Fill it with fresh summer blooms or trailing greenery for a beautiful blend of rustic and elegant.
• Incorporate Crystal Stemware
  Crystal glasses sparkle in the sunlight and contrast beautifully with natural textures. They add just the right hint of refinement without overpowering the relaxed setting.
• Add White or Creamy Stoneware Plates
  Layer plates in soft whites, creams, or greige with varying finishes like matte or crackle glaze. The subtle mix keeps the palette interesting while staying cohesive.
• Accent with Silver Flatware
  Vintage silver flatware, especially when slightly tarnished, adds a timeless, collected feel. It’s perfect for balancing the casual linen and natural materials.
• Introduce Woven Chargers or Placemats
  Rattan or seagrass chargers bring texture and a hint of nature to the table. They also help ground the light palette and define each place setting beautifully.
• Place Mini White Ironstone Pitchers at Each Setting
  Add small ironstone pitchers filled with herbs, single blooms, or even cream for coffee. They’re charming, personal, and delightfully old-world.
• Drape Linen Napkins Casually
  Linen napkins in natural tones like flax or ivory feel effortless and relaxed. Let them drape softly off the plate or tie them loosely with twine for a rustic touch.
• Tuck Blooms into Napkin Rings
  Slip a stem of lavender, zinnia, or rosemary into your napkin ring. It’s a simple way to add color and fragrance, and it ties the whole floral story together.
• Use Vintage Glass Bottles as Bud Vases
  Scatter a few mismatched antique bottles down the table with single-stem flowers. This adds charm, color, and an airy feeling without cluttering the space.
• Add Mercury Glass Votives or Candlesticks
  Their soft shimmer adds a romantic glow to summer evenings. They look especially lovely when mixed with flowers and natural textures like wood or linen.
• Bring in Antique Silver Trays
  Use silver trays to group items like condiments, drinks, or candles. The patina and detail of old silver adds instant elegance and a sense of history.
• Mix in Whitewashed Wooden Accents
  Use whitewashed candleholders, serving boards, or risers for a laid-back coastal or farmhouse look. They work beautifully with the neutral palette.
• Sprinkle in Delicate Bone China or Transferware
  Mix in a few small plates or teacups with floral borders or soft pastels. This adds a subtle pop of color and a layer of vintage storybook charm.
• Scatter Fresh Fruit in Coordinating Colors
  Fresh peaches, figs, or berries in rustic bowls or scattered loosely on the table feel lush and summery. They add both color and an edible decorative element.
• Incorporate a Low Floral Garland
  Create a loose garland of greenery and blooms that runs through your centerpiece. It softens the table and keeps conversation flowing across it.
• Hang Sheer Curtains or Fabrics Nearby
  If you’re dining outside or near windows, flowing white sheers add atmosphere. The breeze through the fabric brings the whole space to life.
• Layer in Natural Elements like Moss or Branches
  Add moss around a centerpiece or tuck in a few bleached branches. These elements add quiet drama and make the table feel like an extension of the garden.
• Finish with a Statement Floral Arrangement
  Use big, blousy summer blooms in bold shades like coral, fuchsia, or soft apricot to wake up your neutral setting. Let them steal the show with joyful color.
