5 Fall Entryway Ideas to Warm Up a Small Foyer to Welcome Guests
In this post: Are you looking for fall entryway ideas? Here are 5 ways to warm up a small foyer to welcome your autumn guests. ⇒

Even my tiniest rooms go through an evolution process.
In fact, small rooms are often the hardest to decorate. It’s difficult to make a statement when you have so little to work with. But with proper planning and the right selections, you can still create a mood in the most petite spaces.
Our back entry is a very small space, but it’s also the one we use all the time.
Even guests, if they are family and have let themselves in, or are friends that have arrived home with us, use this entrance that leads from the garage into our home. Therefore, it’s the space that many see as the introduction to our home.
I decided several years ago when we first moved in that I wanted this space to be a pretty entry foyer and not the classic mudroom you might have if your kids were still living at home.

Entryway Ideas
It went through a few iterations, but ultimately I settled on a lovely neutral scheme that showcased my vintage style and collected antiques.
With a small chest, a couple of chairs, and a shelf unit for display, I managed to accommodate our needs for storage, display and seating.
However, the lack of color didn’t exude any warmth and as fall arrived, I started to crave the tender and cozy feel that fall decor evokes.
Hence, a little update was in order.
Nothing major, to be sure, as I wanted to maintain my French-inspired style, but I amended a few accessories to provide an inviting welcome for all who visit. Here are 5 ways to warm up a small entry foyer (or really any diminutive space).

Use the Floor as a Key Design Element
Like paint, adding or changing a rug is one of the quickest ways to update a space and alter the mood. It recasts an entire plane for maximum impact.
While I was looking for warmth, I was going more for homey comfort than fiery vibrance, so this distressed, faded-look rug was the perfect solution. The soft blue base will work long past the fall season, but I particularly like the hints of terracotta that could be used as accents in my fall styling.
The extra bonus is that remarkably, this is a washable rug. Yep, that’s right. You can put it in the washing machine. It has the loveliest hand-feel, so it lays out well on the floor.

Pick a Seasonal Pop Color
In this case I pulled out the terracotta in the rug to highlight classic autumnal accents around the room. I prefer the tranquil colorations of heirloom pumpkins to their color-saturated cousins, so I used these softer varieties to decorate my shelves.
Copper elements also played a role, both vintage for authenticity, and new in the pretty votives.

Bring in Greenery
I’m a huge fan of fresh flowers so they always play a role in my decorative styling, but quality faux pieces also have a place. This wonderful wreath is lush and welcoming and its placement on the mirror (via a command hook) made a significant difference in the space. This one will certainly stay up through the holiday season, and possibly beyond, which is why an all green wreath is especially versatile.
I also utilized moss pumpkins to round out the natural display. They’re intermingled on the shelves, tying the entire enterprise together.

Soften the Space with Textiles
If you have seating in your entryway, which is great for removing shoes or putting down packages, it’s an ideal spot for adding texture through textiles. In my little foyer I used a nubby knit pillow, but you can also bring in color here, or any number of graphic options.
In a neutral space with a colorless underpinning, if you did nothing more than change the rug and the pillows, you’d have gone a long way to presenting an entirely new space.

Warm Up a Corner
I’m a big fan of floor vases and it matters which ones you choose, as well as what you fill them with. This corner previously was inhabited by a brass umbrella stand with walking sticks and canes. I was trying to build a collection of vintage walking sticks, but it never amounted to much and looked cold and uninspiring in that corner.
Instead, an organic vase of rattan or wood brings much more warmth to the room and a cluster of seasonal branches is the icing on the cake. Fall leaves, pampas feathers, pussy willows or berry branches would all work beautifully in such a container.

Additional Ideas
- When expecting guests, nothing is more welcoming than lit candles
- A rattan basket in the entry is great for spare shoes and slippers
- Try a vintage metal bucket for a spray of fall leaves
- Dried flowers work well for fall, particularly dried hydrangeas
- Be sure to keep those defining elements in your decor that express your true style. Seasonal decorating should add flavor to your existing decor – not replace it.

I’m delighted to walk into my entryway and be greeted by a bit of color and a whole lot of warmth. It feels inviting and reminds me of how family-oriented the fall season is.
And when I tire of the copper and wheat tones, I can pack away those colors and bring out the next group of accents to enhance my rug and wreath.

I love this! I can’t believe that rug is washable. Great idea to use a command hook to hang your wreath on the mirror!
Thanks so much, Ann!! I know – isn’t it amazing to be able to wash an entryway rug? I wish everything was so easy… 🙂
Lory, your Fall entryway is so pretty! I like how you have mixed in some of your antiques. Your copper pitcher is lovely!
I have been looking for an antique copper coffee pot and finally found one from England on Etsy. I just received it in the mail and have it filled with Fall flowers and leaves. It looks so nice on our mantel. This antique coffee pot reminds me of the one in my grannie’s home which her family brought from England.
Have a great week! Thanks for always sharing your gorgeous home with us!
The cherub statue…so sweet! The corner tall basket with leaf stems is a great idea for that little corner behind the door.
I need to pin this…the colors are neutral but warm. That nubby BHG pillow is one I’ve been looking for…more deep taupe than off white.
So subtle yet impressive. How welcoming to come in your back entry. I love the copper and pastel pumpkins. When you say “buds” do you mean what looks like thistle? The only thing I would change is putting a fall leaf on the bottom shelf by the pumpkins like it fell there. Too much white space. I love vignettes.
