In this post: If you’re looking for Halloween decor ideas but prefer elegant Halloween home decor, these Halloween decoration ideas are for you.⇒
It doesn’t help that the key color representing Halloween is orange.
It doesn’t help, that is, if your goal is to bring a sense of elegance to your Halloween home decor.
Halloween is a holiday that many of us started decorating for when our kids were young, as part of the whole ‘trick-or-treating’ experience. In our neighborhood, we’d get together with several families, make a brief round of the houses on our street, and then gather at someone’s home for a casual pizza and candy party.
But even back then, I preferred to downplay the blazing orange from plastic pumpkins in favor of more subdued decorations. Here are 5 chic Halloween decor ideas for an elegant celebration.
1. Tone down the orange
There’s no doubt, nothing says Halloween quite like orange and black. So emblematic is the color combination that it’s almost never used for anything else. Still, you can pair the colors together in a more tasteful way by being selective with the orange you choose. Opt for an orange with a little less vibrance to avoid the brash look of a party store display window.
If you prefer a richer orange, consider using the color by itself. These Chinese lantern branches, above, offer a lovely way to add orange to your Halloween home decor.
2. Play up the black and white
An alternative to choosing the right orange is to omit it altogether. Instead work with black and white, highlighting the classic Halloween motifs, like skeletons and bones, with crystal and silver. This table setting straddles the line between Gothic and pretty by intermingling all of the contrasting elements in a playful, yet sophisticated way.
This is the time of year to bring out the pumpkins and what can be more lush than rich velvet? Black and grey velvets mix with silver lamé for a posh take on the holiday. White or cream would work, as well, but for this look you can steer clear of orange.
3. Use upscale decorative items
If you’d like to extend your Halloween decor ideas beyond the table and scatter vignettes throughout your home, try using upscale decorative items or even borrow items from your closet. An orange cashmere scarf looks dignified draped across a bureau, while a leather eyeglass case adds a similar panache.
Mix faux leopard fur pillows amongst your Halloween decor, as the pattern works well with black, cream and orange.
4. Add copper
Perhaps the ideal addition to chic Halloween home decor is touches of copper, in tabletop items or vases and urns. Copper adds a note of polish, as well as warmth, and plays nicely with orange-based colors ranging from blush to rust. Consider Moscow mule mugs or copper napkin rings and blend them with black plates for a very Halloween look.
5. Amp up the elegance with silver, glitter and crystal
If you want to entertain in style, it’s fun to use sparkling materials like polished metals and gleaming crystal. Try glittered pumpkins or candlesticks, and a crystal candelabra. A beaded skull candle serves a similar function, while cut crystal flutes bounce the candlelight around.
Silver skull place card holders add a shimmer of their own, particularly when set against a backdrop of a black velvet tablecloth. Use as name cards on the table or in the case of this wine tasting, to identify the names of the wines.
Halloween will always have a special place in my heart, as it reminds me of celebrating with my children and our neighborhood friends. But to decorate for adults, it can be even more fun, and if those adults happen to be your kids, then all the better. Regardless of where you stand on the color orange, there are many Halloween decoration ideas that can rival any elegant party!
