Winter Fashion: Casual Winter Outfits Using 4 Great Color Palettes
In this post: Looking to find affordable winter fashion? These ideas will help you style cute casual winter outfits with four great color palettes.⇒

Winter Fashion
My winter wardrobe looks like it belongs to a completely different person.
It’s not that I hibernate or don’t go out in the winter. I love dinners out, or afternoons at the mall, just as much in winter as any other time of year.
But I tend to be a blazer and jeans kind of girl and that just doesn’t work in a season when an overcoat needs to be considered.
During the day when I grab a puffer coat, the blazer would show out the bottom. And in the evening when I’m going for dinner and would choose a longer tailored coat, I worry that the coat will brush the floor in a restaurant thrown over the back of a chair. So, inevitably I’m back to a sweater and a shorter coat.
Between that and the addition of the ubiquitous boot, my winter wardrobe is a good bit more casual than what I wear the rest of the year.
Using Color to Add Style
If you’ve ever felt the same and were looking for ways to add interest to a casual winter wardrobe that’s centered around a neutral capsule, the answer can lie in sophisticated pop colors.
Each of the 4 color themes below is based on adding a chic accent color to a neutral foundation. The key to this look, however, is that the highlight hue you pick matters. In fact, the base color you add it to matters, as well, as certain combinations can look dated and dull.
Let’s look at 4 refined color options for updating a decidedly casual winter wardrobe and adding style and panache to your winter outfits.
Cozy and Affordable
In the groupings I’ve curated, I’ve included casual wear for daytime, but there’s also plenty to choose from to enjoy relaxed evenings out. Beneath each mood board you’ll find a sample outfit of each, plus links to shop the items.
These are all cozy and affordable pieces from Walmart Fashion, with great fit and quality. You can take advantage of their easy online shopping experience and convenient return policy. Note: everything is available at the time of publishing, but due to high demand, they sell out fast. If what you’re looking for is unavailable, be sure to check back as they’re often restocked, or check a similar color way.

Black with Ballet Pink
No doubt, the most common color in many women’s closets is the ever-present black. Certainly my own wardrobe is made up of black tops, black bottoms and black jackets. So when looking to add a bit of punch to a head-to-toe black outfit, a fresh solution is to choose a sophisticated ballet pink. Black and blush is far more refined than brighter pinks and has an association with Paris. Try just an accessory accent like scarf or gloves, or dive in a little further with a pale pink top.

Grey with Ice Blue
Mixing greys with ice blue is the perfect winter pairing and one of my favorite ways to wear blue at all. A color that can look like it came straight from a baby’s nursery looks all the more upscale next to a deep charcoal or a heathered grey. The range of greys here doesn’t matter and in fact I’d mix several together, including a note of silver, if used sparingly. Just stay as pale as possible with the blue and even a touch ‘dirty’.

Oatmeal with Lilac
Like pink, lilac can look like it belongs in a kindergarten classroom, but pair it with oatmeal and you’ve made it oh-so-chic. The key here is to ensure that the neutral tone is more beige or cream, and not optic white, which could make it look a bit cheap (unless you are skiing). If you prefer real white, keep your lilac on the red side so it’s more like a light plum. But with a clean clear lilac, you can’t beat the look of oatmeal or cement.

Camel with Burgundy
If you prefer darker accents try a pop of burgundy with camel. It’s probably my favorite way to wear burgundy and the one I believe is most elegant, as both colors bring out the best in each other. This is one pairing where you can really bring in a range of similar colors, pretty much using all warm neutrals to keep the burgundy from looking too cold. Your burgundy accent might even stretch to a purply-brown, blurring the boundaries a bit. The overall effect will be warm and wonderful.

Whichever way you go, each of these palettes begins with a simple foundation of neutral pieces. With a practical capsule wardrobe in neutral tones, you can add lovely gracious accents for a unique look and upgrade a casual wardrobe to take you many places this winter!
